The Guardians of the Galaxy are here!

Tomorrow is the premiere of what might just be the zaniest space, action-adventure film ever: Guardians of the Galaxy! To celebrate, we've gone to the far reaches of the cosmos (okay, not really, we just went to a few local comic shops) to bring you these great comics:

Find out what makes that irrascible rogue Rocket Raccoon and his deciduous partner, Groot, the most wanted outlaws this side of the Big Dipper! Galaxy's Most Wanted and Rocket Raccoon are both regularly appearing in stores, but RR's is the Free Comic Book Day edition. Both titles are rated "E" for everyone (all ages). You might recall we've featured Rocket before--he's one of our favorites!

Speaking of Free Comic Book Day, check out the Guardians edition from this year for a brand new adventure. Then put on your space helmet and get ready to take off with Star-Lord, their team leader. Star-Lord Annihilation is a thick compliation of several stories of the swashbuckling hero. Both of these are rated "T" for Teen or older.

Then we come to another Guardians title, this one's a preview of the current storyline written by the astronomically talented Brian Michael Bendis. His saga is about the closest you'll get to finding material on which the film is based.

We finish with Infinity, which features the mad titan himself--Thanos! He's so bad, that both the Avengers and the Guardians are out to take him down. This is a FCBD edition that shouldn't be missed! Both these are rated "T" for Teen or older.

All titles are on the secret comic shelf through next week (or until they're checked out!).

Now that you're up on the Guardians past exploits, it's time to hit the theater for their big silver screen debut!

HUGE book donation!

 

Yesterday we were flabbergasted to find the library FILLED with books! Some kind soul sought to donate around THREE DOZEN new additions. Many of these are popular science fiction and fantasy titles--plus a couple of graphic novels!

 

It'll take us a while to sort and organize them, but a hearty THANK YOU! is in order to our mysterious benefactor. Look for some of these already waiting for you the next time you stop by the Library of Justice!

SCI-tember: FINAL WEEK!

Space Gets Wild with Rocket Raccoon!

Landing at the library today to help celebrate SCI-tember: classic adventures of the furriest, swashbuckler in the cosmos--Rocket Raccoon! If you've not heard of him, you will soon--he's the best-known member of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy (think: Avengers in space!). A new movie in the works, due to hit theaters next year, will feature Bradley Cooper's voice in the role. Keep an eye on RR--you'll be seeing him everywhere come next summer!

Now's your chance to get caught up on the classic escapades from his title in the 80s that made him famous! We've even added an additional preview comic for the latest Guardians of the Galaxy series, as a primer for his new adventures as a member of that team. 

Rocket was created by  Bill Mantlo and Keith Giffen. Mantlo wrote the character as a quick-witted, raygun-slinging hero that was quick with one-liners, but he also intended for the title to have a more meaningful message. 

The Rocket Raccoon special issue has several stories and is appropriate for all ages. Guardians will likely appeal to older audiences (we've marked it "T" for teen, but your mileage may vary).

Explore Infinity and Beyond: September is SCI-TEMBER!

Switch on your lightsaber, power-up your electron microscope, and prime those thrusters--it's SCI-tember! We're celebrating science AND science fiction throughout the month of September. That means lots of fresh books and comics celebrating the wonders of nature and imagination from all corners of the universe!

This morning we stocked several new additions including books by sci-fi greats, Ray Bradbury, Arthur C. Clarke, and Margaret Atwood. Not to mention, the first "sequel" Star Wars book by Timothy Zahn that featured characters and events following the storyline in Return of the Jedi. We've even got the only sci-fi novel ever written by astronomer Carl Sagan! (Hint: it was later made it into a movie.) We also snagged a copy of Daniel H. Wilson's Robopocalypse, about an android takeover--which is in developement to become a film directed by Steven Spielberg!

When you stop by this month, you'll also see some great comic books and graphic novels, including some non-fiction science comics (I bet you didn't know those existed!). We'll also have some great selections on the natural world for kids--just in time for back to school!

Fend off the COLD with these stories!

This past weekend the temperature dipped to -11 in our neck of the woods. It hasn't gone much higher but it's slooooowly starting to recover. Back to double digits anyway. So we dug up three books that take place in HOT climes to help warm up your reading this week: Life of Pi, Prince of Persia, and DUNE!

....can't get much warmer than DUNE.
