The Guardians of the Galaxy are here!

Tomorrow is the premiere of what might just be the zaniest space, action-adventure film ever: Guardians of the Galaxy! To celebrate, we've gone to the far reaches of the cosmos (okay, not really, we just went to a few local comic shops) to bring you these great comics:

Find out what makes that irrascible rogue Rocket Raccoon and his deciduous partner, Groot, the most wanted outlaws this side of the Big Dipper! Galaxy's Most Wanted and Rocket Raccoon are both regularly appearing in stores, but RR's is the Free Comic Book Day edition. Both titles are rated "E" for everyone (all ages). You might recall we've featured Rocket before--he's one of our favorites!

Speaking of Free Comic Book Day, check out the Guardians edition from this year for a brand new adventure. Then put on your space helmet and get ready to take off with Star-Lord, their team leader. Star-Lord Annihilation is a thick compliation of several stories of the swashbuckling hero. Both of these are rated "T" for Teen or older.

Then we come to another Guardians title, this one's a preview of the current storyline written by the astronomically talented Brian Michael Bendis. His saga is about the closest you'll get to finding material on which the film is based.

We finish with Infinity, which features the mad titan himself--Thanos! He's so bad, that both the Avengers and the Guardians are out to take him down. This is a FCBD edition that shouldn't be missed! Both these are rated "T" for Teen or older.

All titles are on the secret comic shelf through next week (or until they're checked out!).

Now that you're up on the Guardians past exploits, it's time to hit the theater for their big silver screen debut!

It's BATMAN Week!

Holy cornucopia of comics Batman!

We've got a selection of Batman tales--even some focusing on his partners in crimebusting: Robin and Batgirl. We'll have even more titles throughout the week, so make sure you make more than one stop to check 'em out!

HUGE book donation!

Yesterday we were flabbergasted to find the library FILLED with books! Some kind soul sought to donate around THREE DOZEN new additions. Many of these are popular science fiction and fantasy titles--plus a couple of graphic novels!

It'll take us a while to sort and organize them, but a hearty THANK YOU! is in order to our mysterious benefactor. Look for some of these already waiting for you the next time you stop by the Library of Justice!

New books, PLUS library landscaping....

Drive-by donors

Earlier today a van pulled up next our little free library and out hopped a young woman who FILLED our shelf with great titles! No sooner did we figure out what was happening--and it sped off.

Thank you to whomever dropped off the great additions to our library!!

And it was such a fantastic day, weather-wise, that we've already had several patrons stopping by to check them out!

Greening and preening

It's not news to anyone in these parts that we had a harsh winter this last season. The library stood firm, but is in need of some general upkeep (paint and weather stripping touch ups, mostly). We're also planning some landscaping updates for some added curb appeal throughout the summer--so keep an eye out for new additions!

SpringCon this weekend!

We'll be heading out to SpringCon this weekend at the Minnesota State Fair Grandstand! It's a HUGE celebration of comics, creators, fans and a great chance to strut our geek stripes. We have such a fantastic comic community here in our hometown of Saint Paul (and Minneapolis, we love you too!).

Expect some new titles to be added this week--and maybe a special surprise!

Next year we plan on getting back in the swing of things with another fun event for everyone in the neighborhood. Until then, we'll always have free comics every day!

JUST ARRIVED: A Superhero with a MegaWatt Mission!

Comic books about football players?! Watt-ever are you talking about?!

Although the Library of Justice tends to celebrate superheroes of the caped and super-cosmic variety, today we'd like to honor one of the earthly realm:

ON WISCONSIN!
Houston Texan defensive end and former Wisconsin Badger, J.J. Watt!

Throughout his collegiate career, although J.J. was certainly known for his defensive dominance, he was also--more importantly!--known for his work ethic. Originally from Waukesha, Wisconsin, J.J. started out playing football at Central Michigan University. After one season, he transferred to the University of Wisconsin, where his defensive excellence help take the Badgers to two bowl games. He was also honored as an All American and a Lott Trophy winner. Throughout all of his athletic achievements, J.J. has always been celebrated for having great character and a tireless drive to be the best athlete and person he can possibly be.

His motto, "Dream Big. Work Hard." has always been an essential part of J.J.'s persona. We all understood that that was what he was really about.

No one in Wisconsin was surprised  when J.J. went 11th in the NFL draft. Nor were any of us surprised that, since his arrival in Houston, he's been racking up trips to the Pro Bowl and honors like Defensive Player of the Year.

Don't mess with this Texan!
This guy is truly this good.

But the part that makes him great is what he does off the field. Before he'd ever sacked a pro quarterback or shown the state of Texas what Watt was all about, J.J. had established his charitable foundation. In J.J.'s own words:

"I hope to make you proud of me on the field as well as off the field by helping the kids in the community have the same opportunities that were afforded to me. That is only possible with the support of people like you and for that I’d like to say thank you! I would not have received such success if it were not for the support of athletics…. this is the intent of my organization…."

The Justin J. Watt Foundation strives to "provide after-school opportunities for children in the community to become involved in athletics, so that they may learn the basic character traits of accountability, teamwork, leadership, work ethic and perseverance while in a safe and supervised environment with their peers."

Pretty super-heroic, don't you think?

So it shouldn't surprise you that J.J. Watt was one of the first people chosen when D.C. Comics partnered with the NFL and Gatorade to tell the stories of professional football players. His comic book, MegaWatt, appeared online this fall and was given out at a Texan's game at the end of December. The story documents J.J.'s evolution from an over-looked college prospect to the apex of football stardom. Most importantly, it emphasizes the significance of work ethic, perseverance, and character.

THANK YOU JJWF!!!
When the Library of Justice learned about this comic book, we wrote to the J.J. Watt Foundation via their Facebook page and requested a copy. And guess Watt? The lovely folks of the JJWF sent plenty of copies for our Little Free Library! How awesome is that?! We hope you'll stop by and learn all about J.J.'s journey from small-town kid to NFL MegaWatt superstar.

Like any tale worth telling, it's all about dreaming big, working hard, and always believing in your abilities. We think that's pretty amazing...and we know you will too!

**Thank you again to the Justin J. Watt Foundation for sending us the comics...and for all the work you do to provide athletic opportunities for kids. We think that's super cool! Anyone interested in learning about the foundation should follow them on Facebook or visit their website. Along with learning about J.J. and his foundation's work, you can buy merchandise and support their efforts.
