Help! We're HAUNTED!

Halloween is right around the corner and we've found ourselves SPOOKED--that is, the Library is filled with supernatural selections. We're desperate for friends and neighbors to stop by and bust some ghosts, slay some vampires, and fight evil by picking up some scary stories this week.

Here's what's haunting our hallowed halls....

Flesh-eating zombies stalking the comics shelf!

Seen the new hit Sleepy Hollow TV series? Get the scoop on the original story!

Fun children's stories and picture books, including one by local author and illustrator Sam Hiti!

Frightening fables for young readers!

Grown-up supernatural tales of suspense!

RECOMMENDED: Another witching story that's back in the library is A Discovery of Witches, which comes highly recommended from Emily!

The original Frankenstein: he's no lumbering oaf, but a monster obsessed with revenge!

...and the baddest for last: DRACULA! A den of vampires...and their slayers: our finest president and a valley girl!

Be sure to stop by soon before we're overtaken by ghastly ghouls!

Super-excited about our super prizes!

A while aback I entered a random drawing from one of our favorite kids' publishers, Capstone Books. Wouldn't you know it--WE WON! (Or were one of several winners, to be honest, I'm not sure.) They sent us this awesome Superman Family Adventures library edition (hardcover) book and a super-big tote bag. The bag is especially nice, since it comes in handy for carrying large loads of books and comics while we rotate stock in the library.

Captsone makes several great series, but we're partial to the superheroic genres, including the SFA we've blogged about before. If the art style looks familiar, you may have see authors Franco and Art Baltazaar work before on Tiny Titans, based on DC Comics' Teen Titans. These are fantastic books for early readers, with lots of action to hold their attention and about the most colorful graphic style you'll find in any comic book.

One thing I'm particularly excited about is the reverse side with a fantastic illustration of Wonder Woman. WW is tough to find these days--she's usually lumped in with the Justice League--so it was a nice surprise to see her get some prominent face-time!

Relatedly, you'll be hearing more about Wonder Woman in the coming months as we seek to track down some more girl-friendly comic book characters for the neighborhood.

Back to Capstone--they're fantastic and they do a great deal of good to promote literacy of all ages, but especially in getting young readers interested. So thank you Capstone for your fantastic books and for the wonderful prizes!

You'll find Superman Family Adventures in the library now, check it out!

Just added: CALVIN and HOBBES anthologies!

Need to get away from it all? Then stop by the Library of Justice and jump into the feverish daydreams of one six-year-old Calvin and his stuffed tiger Hobbes in Bill Watterston's classic comic strip. We've just stocked several softcovers collecting the daily strips!

It almost pained me to put them in the Library this evening--I kept leafing through them in all their black and white glory. Every panel bursting with frantic imagination!

These are great, easy-to-read digests that are perfect for kids and grown-ups alike--stop by and check 'em out!

Seasons Greetings and Salutations!

We've seen an increase in traffic to this site and our second home on Facebook, thanks to some promotion on the official Little Free Library Facebook page--so WELCOME! ...to our new visitors!

Feel free to poke around the site and learn more about out pint-sized hall of (literary) heroes and how it came to be.

It's been a busy month of December for us. Over the last week or so we've done a complete rotation of the books and comics in the library. We received a few new donations that have now been stamped and added this past weekend. Just about everything in the library now is fresh--save for the recent movie novels we featured in the From Books to Screen series (they're in there also).

Other new additions include:

Crime and mystery books, graphic novels, and comics--for a variety of ages. Classic Nancy Drew books! And a comic version of Nancy's newer adventures too.

By way of a generous donor we now have some excellent Batman: Shadow of the Bat comics following the caped crusader through his adventures as the "World's Greatest Detective" (sorry Sherlock!) as takes on the inmates at Arkham Asylum.

And I'm SUPER excited about Incognito, a great couple of graphic novels by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. Not your typical superhero-fare, they're steeped in intrigue have a classic pulp noir look and feel to them (they're for grown ups, FYI).

If novels are more your thing, we have a copy of the 1934 detective classic The Thin Man by Dashiell Hammet!

We also acquired two editions of globe-trotting reporter/detective Tintin. While relatively unknown in the US before his big film debut last year, Tintin has been a cherished character in Europe for decades and more well-known around the world. Each book has three classic Tintin adventures and are great for kids of all ages.

Finally, we'd like to pay tribute to the seasonal help we hired to provide customer service and spread some holiday cheer. He was all smiles when he began:

...but I'm afraid we worked the chap a bit too hard:

The holidays can be tough on all of us I guess.

Before he left us, he put together a wonderful selection of Christmas titles to get you in the spirit of the season. And there are many more books, comics, and graphic novels to check out as well!

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and have a fantastic New Year!

P.S. You can always find us on this site by going to www.libraryofjustice.org!

Christmas comes to the Library of Justice!

On this day in 1843, Charles Dickens holiday classic, A Christmas Carol was first published in novella form. It was an instant hit, and was quickly adapted for the stage the following year. We have the novella in stock now along with a graphic novel adaption--stop by and see what the Spirit of Christmas past has in store for you!

Also new to the Library of Justice are several selections from the American Girls storybook series (based on the wildly popular dolls) with a variety of Christmas and wintry themes for children.

And finally, it's a few days before Christmas (not the night before) but we found a few mice stirring in the library for your litte mice at home, including the fantasy classic Redwall by Brian Jacques and Stuart Little by E.B. White. Epic adventures from some of our favorite mouse heroes!

Good Reading!

JUST ADDED: New Superhero books and comics!

The Library of Justice received not one, but TWO packages packed with super-powered donations recently....

The first is a fresh batch of classic comics from Eric in Salina, Kansas, which included single issues of Batman: Shadow of the Bat, Iron Man, Sword of the Atom, Richie Rich, and others:

The second delivery comes from Jeny in Houston, Texas, who also is a librarian (like, with a real Masters in Library Sciences and everything!) and sent these library-quality hardcover DC superheroes books for young ones:

Thanks for the generous donations--you guys are real heroes of literacy! Several of these are now available in the Library of Justice. Single issues on the secret comic shelf, hard-backs on the main shelf.

Enjoy!
