Happy Holidays from the Library of Justice!

Library of Justice Holidays Christmas Winter 2020 with lights and Bert and Grover from Sesame Street

Well, it's been QUITE THE YEAR, folks. We hope you've all be staying safe and healthy during these very uncertain times. But it does seem like an upswing is right around the corner. To celebrate a little of that positivity, we've put in some fresh comic selections in the library. The assistant librarian was very choosy about which titles were included.

We've also put in a few pals from Sesame Street to help raise spirits for the lucky folks who find them. Soon we'll say good bye (good riddance?) to 2020.

Until then, stay safe, be well, and we hope you enjoy the books!

Are you going to MSP ComicCon?

Whether you're new to comics or an hold hat at this sort of thing, MSP ComicCon is THE event you of the spring. Hence, it's former nickname "SpringCon," it's grown to be the largest, independent comic book convention in Minnesota, held at the Grandstand at the Minnesota State Fair every mid-May to kick off the summer.

Most importantly, it's the BEST place to meet comic book artists and writers, discover new titles, and see a TON of cool stuff. Parents looking for something to take the kids to in May, this is a fun, family-friendly atmosphere with all of your kids' favorite heroes--some of them walking around in costume too!

And if you're a die-hard comic book fan, there's dozens of vendors who've brought along their huge back stock older issues to help you complete your collection. We usually stock up on TONS of great comics for the year there. Seriously, it's a bargain hunter's paradise.

It's great big fun you don't want to miss!

New fiction in the library!

All unique and compelling in their own way.

A Reunion of Ghosts is a thoughtful story about reckoning with your family history and understanding life as your own.

Last Night in Montreal is a noir-ish thriller told in a riveting, non-linear manner.

I Married You for Happiness is the story of a woman reflecting on her marriage as she lays next to her recently deceased husband. It covers the ups and downs of a long, beautiful journey.

One of Marvel's oldest and most powerful heroes is FINALLY getting a movie! Surgeon turned master of magic and eventually Sorcerer Supreme, Steven Strange joins the pantheon of movie heroes. Doctor Strange will debut November 4 this year.

In the Marvel movie-verse we first heard SHIELD mention Steven Strange being a possible "threat" in Captain America: Winter Soldier. It will be great to see that hint from a few years back finally play out on screen.

Feast your eyes on Marvel's Sorcerer Supreme!

Captain America: CIVIL WAR trailer is here!

The Avengers are back! And things are not looking good--Captain America and Iron Man are frenemies! How did they come to this?

The trailer for next summer's blockbuster Marvel film, Captain America: Civil War is already here and gives us a glimpse of the ever-widening rift between former popsicle and die-hard boy scout Steve Rogers and genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist. Tony Stark.

This next chapter in the Marvel movie cycle is based on the 2006 comic book crossover event of the same name. In that storyline, Cap and ol' Shellhead were at odds over whether to comply with a government mandate to register and reveal their secret identities.

No word yet on how close the film will hew to the comics, but it looks like at least the main pillars of that plot are in place:
  • Captain America and Iron Man as opposing team leaders? CHECK!
  • An inciting "disaster" (or several accumulating ones from previous films) to make the government take action? CHECK!
  • Fast-paced chases and fight scenes? CHECK!
We're still not sure how big a role Cap's old army pal, Bucky Barnes, AKA The Winter Soldier, will play in the story. Also no word on whether Spider-man will make an appearance. He was a key player in the comics. Spidey's movie rights are owned by Sony, but there was word that they might be striking a deal with Marvel Studios to appear.

Still, looks like it's going to be a superhero squabble for the record books. Here's the trailer--enjoy!

EDIT: Nifty scene-by-scene breakdown of the trailer by io9!

The Guardians of the Galaxy are here!

Tomorrow is the premiere of what might just be the zaniest space, action-adventure film ever: Guardians of the Galaxy! To celebrate, we've gone to the far reaches of the cosmos (okay, not really, we just went to a few local comic shops) to bring you these great comics:

Find out what makes that irrascible rogue Rocket Raccoon and his deciduous partner, Groot, the most wanted outlaws this side of the Big Dipper! Galaxy's Most Wanted and Rocket Raccoon are both regularly appearing in stores, but RR's is the Free Comic Book Day edition. Both titles are rated "E" for everyone (all ages). You might recall we've featured Rocket before--he's one of our favorites!

Speaking of Free Comic Book Day, check out the Guardians edition from this year for a brand new adventure. Then put on your space helmet and get ready to take off with Star-Lord, their team leader. Star-Lord Annihilation is a thick compliation of several stories of the swashbuckling hero. Both of these are rated "T" for Teen or older.

Then we come to another Guardians title, this one's a preview of the current storyline written by the astronomically talented Brian Michael Bendis. His saga is about the closest you'll get to finding material on which the film is based.

We finish with Infinity, which features the mad titan himself--Thanos! He's so bad, that both the Avengers and the Guardians are out to take him down. This is a FCBD edition that shouldn't be missed! Both these are rated "T" for Teen or older.

All titles are on the secret comic shelf through next week (or until they're checked out!).

Now that you're up on the Guardians past exploits, it's time to hit the theater for their big silver screen debut!

    It's BATMAN Week!

Never before has a character in popular culture so electrified our collective imagination as Batman has in comics, books and movies. Help the Dark Knight celebrate 75 years of chasing down and putting away bad guys in the name of justice.

    Holy cornucopia of comics Batman!

We've got a selection of Batman tales--even some focusing on his partners in crimebusting: Robin and Batgirl. We'll have even more titles throughout the week, so make sure you make more than one stop to check 'em out!

    HUGE book donation!

Yesterday we were flabbergasted to find the library FILLED with books! Some kind soul sought to donate around THREE DOZEN new additions. Many of these are popular science fiction and fantasy titles--plus a couple of graphic novels!

It'll take us a while to sort and organize them, but a hearty THANK YOU! is in order to our mysterious benefactor. Look for some of these already waiting for you the next time you stop by the Library of Justice!
